The commonly used hard finishing agents include melamine resin, urea formaldehyde resin, polyacrylate, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, starch, and some of their modified products. The main performance comparison of these hardening agents is shown in the table below:
The fabric treated with melamine resin has good stiffness, shrinkage, elasticity, and feel, especially for synthetic fibers. After finishing, the fabric is prone to moisture absorption, decreased stiffness, yellowing, decreased strength, and release of free formaldehyde; The storage stability of the finishing agent is poor.
The fabric treated with urea formaldehyde resin has good stiffness and low raw material cost. After finishing, the fabric has poor elasticity, rough feel, high shrinkage rate, poor water washing resistance, and releases free formaldehyde; The storage stability of the finishing agent is poor.
Polyacrylate and polyvinyl acetate have characteristics such as light resistance, aging resistance, and non yellowing. They are easy to synthesize, have good storage stability, and do not produce free formaldehyde; The stiffness effect is good, especially suitable for the stiffness finishing of cellulose fiber fabrics. When the amount of finishing agent is the same, the stiffness effect on synthetic fiber fabrics is not as good as that of melamine resin, and the finished fabric lacks elasticity and a sense of thickness.
Polyvinyl acetate has brittleness and poor frost resistance. Polyvinyl alcohol has good rheological properties and can form a film with high strength, which has a good stiffness finishing effect on cellulose fabrics. It is difficult to degrade in natural environment and can form a large number of foam in water; Finishing agents are prone to softening and exudation when heated on fabrics, resulting in poor washing resistance. Modified starch raw materials are easy to obtain, inexpensive, non corrosive, convenient to use, and biodegradable, which can make the fabric have a good stiffening effect. After finishing, the stiffness of the fabric decreases after being affected by moisture, which is prone to deterioration and mold formation, poor water washing resistance, rough hand feel, and poor elasticity.
